The troop had a great backpacking trip to Hamman Scout Ranch near Bandera in early January. The weather was fantastic and the trip was enjoyed by all. We even had fresh, hot chocolate cake made on a backpacker's oven, courtesy of Scoutmaster Porter. Two driving breaks at Buc-ee's en route polished off a great event. February found us on the trail again at El Rancho Cima Scout Camp near San Marcos. We hiked the rugged ledges of the Devil's Backbone in spite of fog and rain. The weather cleared in time for a nice afternoon and a great campfire, complete with ghost stories and cake to celebrate SM Porter's birthday. Of course, we stopped at Buc-ee's en route, voted the best gas station in Texas by Troop 125. In April, we backpacked and primitive camped at Pedernales Falls State Park, west of Austin. Highlights of the trip included a visit to the two major Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson historical sites, hiking the falls area, exploring the backcountry, and swimming in the beautiful Pedernales river. A candlelight "campfire" completed the perfect day. The scenery and weather could not have been better, and everyone voted to return to Pedernales Falls for another campout. May's campout found us fishing and crabbing on the upper Texas Coast near Sabine Pass. What's in store for June? Why, Schillterbahn of course! In June, we also sent two crews to trek the Philmont Double H Ranch property in New Mexico (June 19-27). Fantastic stories came back about this new facility. We are also sent a crew to the Sea Base Bahamas Adventure on May 30-June 5, 2008. The scouts crewed a 47-ft sailing ship for a week and enjoyed every minute of sailing, snorkeling and fishing. The fun continued when we returned to Camp Hale for Summer Camp in 2008 during the second week in July. We sent a large group of scouts this year covering a wide age range and all did a great job on advancements and merit badges. The August campout at Lake Livingston will include work on the Small Boat Sailing merit badge. -by the webmaster |
